About this image
The Burren, also known as An Bhoireann (the ‘place of stone’) located in northwest County Clare, Ireland is one of the largest karst landscapes in Europe. Described by Cistercian monks as the ‘fertile rock’ and shaped by nature and many generations of Irish farmers, the Burren is really unique, beautiful and worth seeing place rich with historical and archaeological sites.
This photograph was taken while I was traveling around the Burren with my good friend Shane Conneelly. It was a lovely day but the light was extremely hazy. Towards evening the light improved slightly so we decided to climb Black Head, located near Fanore. We were told that there is an ancient stone fort at the top and that there are some of the oldest stone walls in Ireland forming separating boundaries on the fields of stone. As sunset approached the hazy light turned quite surreal. The ocean reflected the color of the sky, the horizon almost disappeared and the division between earth and sky became unclear. The lace like stone walls looked timeless. The limestone pavement turned a golden hue as it was painted with a beautiful warm light.
This photo would not have been possible without the strong haze as flare would probable have been a problem.
Rock Wall, Black Head 1 received a Diamond award in 2011 IPPA photographer of the year awards. A Diamond is the highest possible award you can receive from the IPPA.
