About this image
The Giant's Causeway is an area of unique rock formations created by about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption some 50 to 60 million years ago. It is located on the northeast coast of Ireland, about two miles north of the town of Bushmills in County Antrim. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal though there are some with up to eight sides. The tallest are about 12 meters high. This gorgeous geological wonder is really worth visiting!
